kerry viewpoint, seattle, wa
Kerry Park affords photographers the quintessential
Seattle postcard. Situated high on Queen Anne Hill to the north of the city, it
provides a great view of the Space Needle in front of downtown. On a clear day,
Mt Rainier is visible just to the right of the skyline.
The viewpoint is frequently visited by tourists and other photographers. On a
warm summer night expect to arrive well before dusk to secure a location.
Tourists will continue to arrive throughout the night. Due to the romantic
qualities of the viewpoint you'll be frequently asked to take snapshots.
seasonal variations
The space need changes the mood of the tower to suit
the season. Throughout the year the tower marks major holidays by painting the
top of the tower or turning on special lights. For example for the weeks
preceding Valentine's Day, the top of the tower is light with red lights.
At New Year's, the Space Needle is host to North America's largest structure
launched fireworks show. While the skyline is a great backdrop to the show,
prevailing winds often drive smoke directly into the viewpoint and the show is
best captured from a downwind location.
Under the right weather conditions, summer provides a unique opportunity to
capture Mr Rainier bathed in purple light. Look for a clear day with a set of
clouds over the Olympic Mountains to the west of the city but clear skies over
the Pacific Ocean on the other side. If the weather's just right, sunlight
bounces off the clouds over the Olympics and illuminates Rainer while the rest
of the sky is still in dusk.
