pike place market, seattle, wa
While Pike Place Market is one of the top tourist
destinations in the city, the 100 year old internationally recognized farmers
market is worth fighting the crowds. In addition to the usual farmer's market
fair (detail and macro shots of various fruits and vegetables), you'll find
fish mongers tossing freshly purchased salmon, artists creating their crafts
while waiting for a sale and throngs of tourists milling around to find that
perfect treasure.
At the corner of Pike Street and Pike Place (just West of Pike & 1st)
you'll find the Pike Place Pig. Drop in a few coins to support the Market
Association, and take a step to watch the guys at world famous
Pike Place Fish Market entertain you as they toss fish around.
Usually you'll get a much better show (and shots) if you buy a fish or two.
From this central location in the market you can venture north on this floor to
the rest of the farmer's market booths (green grocers, fish mongers, and
crafts). To the south, east and below you are more shops. To the west and down
the market steps is the waterfront.
Go early to avoid the crowds as the market fills by 9am or so. If you're willing
to get up early enough, the neon lights of the market and early morning
activity offer some breathtaking shots.
Lighting can definitely be a challenge. Even on a bright sunny day, the ground
level floor is protected by heavy shade. Expect to be shooting with at least
ISO 400 (or higher). Flash photography is permitted but can be challenging
given the varied lighting in the stalls. Given the crowds a tripod isn't an
option.
after the market
Just north of the market is a great park overlooking
the waterfront. In the summer this small urban park is often filled with people
and provides a great location for a market inspired picnic.
Near the Flying Fish booth (and the brass Pike Place
Pig) is a set of stairs leading to the lower shops and the waterfront.
